The Promise of Spring

Hello!

February 10th marks the beginning of Tu B'Shevat which is considered the Jewish New Year of the Trees.  Falling smack in the middle of winter, when the weather is usually not at its best, the age-old festival, which some date to the early Middle Ages, heralds the prospect of regeneration, of sunnier days ahead.  Lifting our spirits when they sag under the weight of gloves, hats, and scarves.

The promise of spring in our steps isn't the only thing that is happening this month. Friendship Circle continues to focus on new ideas to bring fun, quality programs to you and your families.

Since September, we initiated a partnership with  Carousel of Progress Academy, a performing arts school for students with special needs.  It was a huge hit so we began a second session on January 22nd.  We went from a class of 4 to a class of 8 students.  We are hoping in the future to continue to grow the program and add Martial Arts to the already scheduled Dance and Drama.

The Chabad Center and Friendship Circle held a safeTalk Suicide Alertness Training. This was a 3 hour suicide alertness training to equip participants with the tools to help in times of crisis.  We were thrilled to provide this important training to over 13 participants.

Mom's Night Out cooking event was held in November.  A cooking event is great way to take time to creatively work together and have fun.  If you missed this event, we will be planning another in the near future.

To celebrate Chanukah, we held an awesome  Glow in the Dark Chanukah Party.  Mad Science was on hand to entertain and educate the children about the scientific properties of fire and ice.  We made glow in the dark menorahs, ate latkes, and donuts.   It was a great way to celebrate and learn about the festival of lights!

Also in December, we held a  Wonderful Winter Mini-Camp.  It was a full house with campers cooking, crafting, and making music!

We implemented a cooking series called  Chef It Up to introduce the children to a life skill of healthy cooking. The children made spring rolls, cucumber cups, mozzarella pizza sticks, zucchini boats, apple pie snack cups, and in celebration of Chanukah, an edible dreidel!

Most recently we held our  MLK Min-Camp in January while the children were off from their primary schools.  This is the 3rd mini-camp held in our series of 5 camps that we provide throughout the year.  We had 3, very special, 4 legged, furry visitors join us and shower us with lots of licks at camp.

Currently we have our  Performing Arts classes running very smoothly every Wednesday.  The performance for this session will be on February 26, 2020 at 7:00PM.

February 17, 2020 is our  Presidents Day Mini-Camp.  Space is limited, so please make sure you RSVP on our website to hold your spot.

February 18th is our second session in a 5 part series called  Time Out For Parents. This is a support group for parents of children with special needs to share their experiences and gain support from others.   These sessions are led by a licensed social worker.  We encourage you to attend one or all sessions.  Please RSVP to let us know you can join us.

Looking towards the future, we are planning an  Ice Cream and DJ Dance Party on March 22nd,  Muffins with Mom on May 3rd, and  Donuts with Dad on June 14th.

June 2nd, at Vibe, is our much anticipated  Evening of Appreciation! This is to honor our fabulous volunteers, whom without them, I could never do what we do for our special families.

In addition to all the amazing programming, we continue to provide friendship and support in the homes of our families through our  Friends at Home program.   We continually add to the growing list of wonderful, caring, teens.  For this, I THANK YOU!   If you are participating in our Friends at Home program, this is a good time to check in with me if you have any questions, or concerns.  You can always drop me an email.  I look forward to any and all feedback.

I am excitedly looking forward to our upcoming schedule.

Best,

Jackie Gross
